Pops & Bangs / Overrun Calibration

Professional Pops & Bangs / Overrun Calibration

ZenTune provides custom pops, bangs and crackle calibration for supported petrol vehicles. The calibration modifies selected overrun strategies within the ECU to create a controlled exhaust crackle or popping effect during deceleration.

Rather than applying one generic setting to every vehicle, the calibration can be developed according to the engine, ECU software, exhaust configuration and the behaviour requested by the workshop.

Custom Overrun Calibration

Pops and bangs are created by carefully modifying supported ignition, fuel and overrun strategies during specific operating conditions.

The objective is to create the requested exhaust character while maintaining controlled activation rather than having the effect operate continuously throughout normal driving.

  • Vehicle-specific overrun calibration
  • Adjustable crackle intensity
  • Custom RPM activation range
  • Controlled deceleration activation
  • Sport-mode activation where supported
  • Warm-engine activation strategies where available
  • Calibration tailored to the exhaust configuration

Choose the Character of the Tune

Different vehicles and exhaust systems respond differently to overrun calibration. Where supported, the calibration can be adjusted to provide anything from a subtle crackle to a more pronounced performance-style exhaust note.

Mild Crackle

A restrained overrun effect designed to add a subtle crackle during selected deceleration conditions.

Sport Crackle

A more noticeable calibration with stronger and more frequent overrun activity while retaining defined activation conditions.

Aggressive Pops & Bangs

A stronger effect may be possible on selected applications and suitable exhaust configurations. Availability depends on the ECU strategy, engine and hardware fitted to the vehicle.

RPM Range & Activation Strategy

Where supported, ZenTune can define the operating area in which the overrun effect becomes active. This may include minimum and maximum engine speed, throttle position, vehicle mode and other ECU operating conditions.

Restricting the effect to an appropriate operating range can provide a much more refined result than allowing continuous crackle during every deceleration event.

Sport Mode Activation

Some vehicles allow the overrun calibration to be linked to a factory driving mode. Where the ECU strategy supports this, the pops and bangs effect may be configured to operate primarily in Sport, Dynamic or another performance-oriented mode.

This allows the vehicle to retain more conventional behaviour during normal driving while providing the requested exhaust character when the performance mode is selected.

Exhaust Configuration

Exhaust hardware has a significant influence on the volume and character of an overrun calibration. Vehicles with freer-flowing performance exhaust systems will generally produce a more noticeable result than vehicles retaining heavily restricted factory exhaust components.

The workshop should provide accurate information regarding downpipes, catalytic converters, particulate filters and other exhaust modifications when submitting the tuning request.

Vehicle-Specific ECU Calibration

Overrun strategies vary significantly between ECU families and vehicle manufacturers. ZenTune therefore develops the calibration from the original ECU file supplied by the workshop.

Ignition strategy, fuel cut behaviour, torque intervention and other relevant functions are reviewed according to the exact ECU software rather than applying a universal modification.

Not every ECU supports the same activation methods or adjustment range. Available options will therefore vary between vehicles and software versions.

Pops & Bangs File Service for Workshops

ZenTune operates as a professional ECU tuning file service for workshops and tuning businesses. The workshop performs the ECU read and write process while ZenTune supplies the calibrated file.

  1. Read the vehicle's original ECU file using your supported tuning tool.
  2. Upload the original file through the ZenTune portal.
  3. Select the Pops & Bangs / Overrun option.
  4. Provide the exhaust configuration and desired behaviour.
  5. Download the completed calibration once processing is complete.
  6. Write the calibrated file back to the ECU using your tuning tool.

Important Considerations

Aggressive overrun strategies increase exhaust temperature and thermal load. For this reason, the condition and configuration of the exhaust system must be considered before requesting a strong pops and bangs calibration.

ZenTune does not recommend aggressive overrun calibration on vehicles where the exhaust hardware is unsuitable for the requested strategy.

Important: Exhaust noise and vehicle modifications may be regulated in your jurisdiction. Workshops are responsible for ensuring that any calibration supplied is used in an appropriate and legally permitted application.
